Episode #232: The Books of Enoch Part 2 W/Ken Peterson

We're going to finish up book one, we're going to talk about book two and three, and boy, if you're a fan of the temple, you're going to love this episode. So with that, let's just jump right back into the conversation. Chapter 98 Describing the last days. You'll like this one now I swear unto you, to the wise and the foolish, For you shall see many things upon the earth, for you, for you, for you. Men in the end, shall put on more jewelry than women, and more multi colored ornaments than a virgin. I mean, I just the references to in my opinion, the reference seems to be kind of transvestism, right?

I can't help but go there. Ken and I might be wrong but I I have a hard time not making that connection. All right, you're not going to like this one. His vision of the last days. In those days they, the women, shall become pregnant, but they, the sinners, shall come out and abort their infants and cast them out from their midst, and they shall also abandoned their other children, casting their infants out while they are still suckling. They shall neither return to them their babies, nor have compassion upon their loved ones. Boy, did he see the last days or. What man Enoch called it.

That's the end of First Enoch, which begins there was a wise man oops, sorry, the story of Enoch and how the Lord took him to heaven. So we didn't get a lot of that in First Enoch. Let's see that talks about and the most marvelous and glorious and shining many eyed station of the Lord's servants and of the Lord's immovable throne. Wait, sorry, what we need to know here, you see this a letter A up here.

4:18 There are two lengthy manuscripts of Second Enoch, and they've both been included because they're almost the same but slightly different, and they call them Recension A. And recension JJ is longer than A, so I'll refer to J more frequently. Here we go, and the ranks and the organization of the bodiless armies. Who are the bodiless armies? That would be the third host of heaven that was cast down of Lucifer. Well, these are the ones that are serving. These are with. God. OK, those are the ones that have to be.

Rescension a says their wings were Their arms were like wings. They stood at the head of my bed, called me by my name. Then I awoke from my sleep and saw those men standing in front of me for real, in actuality.

6:47 And they're the ones who came to get him. Yeah, that would be a bit disconcerting to wake up to. I'm just saying. What I love is the very specific descriptions of resurrected beings. We talked about resurrection a lot, but we don't have any real concept of what that looks like because we can. So I, I love these incredible descriptions. Give us some idea of what that glory is. All right. Now we're going to go to page 110 where he starts talking about multiple heavens. Chapter 3 of Second Enoch about the taking away of Enoch and how the angels took him on the first on to the 1st heaven.

7:32 Paul talks about 3 heavens and he also talks about 7 heavens. Here. They're going to talk about 10 heavens. Do they disagree with one another? We believe in three degrees of glory. Or do we? But but I would say this isn't the celestial Kingdom divided up into three sub kingdoms? That's exactly what I'm thinking. So we talk about the three grand divisions, as does Paul, but then Paul also talks about the 7th heaven. And so within these kingdoms of glory there are further divisions. We know that for a fact for the celestial, and it would make sense. It would be the same for the other kingdoms. Absolutely.

8:16 About the taking away being it go. And it came about and it came to pass. But I had spoken to my sons. This is Enoch. These men. Those men called me, these two guys, they took me up onto their wings and carried me up to the 1st heaven and placed me on the clouds. So this is not the celestial, this is between earth and the celestial. This is the one that's closest to the earth. So this would be more like a telestial realm. And I and be. And behold, they were moving these clouds, and there I perceived the air higher up and higher still I saw the ether. They placed me on the 1st heaven that they showed me, a vast ocean, much bigger than the earthly ocean.

9:02 And they led before my face the elders and the rulers of the stellar orders, stars the lowest, the rulers of the T Lesson orders hidden cool. The second order, which would still be amongst the telestial, I think I would say, I go to where it says Chapter 7. And those men picked me up, these two angels, and brought me up to the 2nd heaven. And they showed me, and I saw a darkness greater than earthly darkness. And there I perceived prisoners under guard, hanging up, waiting for the measureless judgment, Those who are waiting. And then in chapter 8.

9:53 And those men took me from there, and they brought me up to the 3rd heaven and set me down there. And I looked downward and I saw paradise. Guess what? That would be the terrestrial order. The terrestrial edema was terrestrial. Earth was in a terrestrial state before the fall. The earth will be restored to its terrestrial state during Millennium. They said, me, I looked downward and I saw paradise, and that place is inconceivably pleasant. And I saw the trees in full flower, and their fruits were ripe and pleasant, smelling in every food and yielding and giving off profusely a pleasant fragrance. And in the midst of them was the tree of life, the tree of life and that place where the Lord takes a rest when He goes into paradise, which He talked about in First Enoch. And that tree is indescribable.

10:45 Her pleasantness and fine fragments are more beautiful than any other. What this is, is an absolute confirmation of section 76. What says that says that the that Jesus Christ ministers to the terrestrial and the Holy Ghost ministers to the telestial? Right. And that the so that the telestial do not have direct access to Christ and the terrestrial do not have direct access to the Father. Yeah, this Mormon doctrine straight up in front of us. Yep, Yep, All right. Then he sees places of punishment, and I said, whoa, how very frightful this place is. And those man, his guide said to me, This place Enoch, has been prepared for those who do not glorify God, who practice on the earth the sin which is against nature, which is child corruption in the anus, in the manner of Sodom. 11:57 This is actually deeper than just. I mean, just not deeper. This is actually worse than just LGBTQ stuff, right? This seems to be which is child corruption. Child Child essay I That's rough. Cool. Yep, calling it out. Now we go to hear from horrible things to exquisite things. And you understand why Enoch was crying, I guess. Yeah, well, even that fits a pattern, right? Arguably Joseph's worst day, when he's being come upon by dark forces in the in the Sacred Grove turns into his brightest day in a moment's notice.

12:48 Yeah, in the middle of heaven I saw armed troops. This is the part of the 4th Heaven armed troops worshiping the Lord with tympani and pipes and unceasing voices and pleasant voices and pleasant and unceasing in various songs which it is impossible to describe, and every mind would be quite astonished. See if we need to take a break or not. Every mind would be quite astonished, so marvelous and wonderful is the singing of these angels, and I was delighted listening to them.

13:39 Then he goes to the 5th heaven. By the way, in later accounts, in I think Thirteenic describes these heavens as being concentric palaces, like concentric circles, a palace within a palace within a palace, until you get to the center palace, which is, guess what, the throne of God. Many rooms are in my father's mansion. But consider the the order of that circles within circles. I mean, that's the Kolob theorem again. Yep. And those men took me up on their wings and placed me on the 5th Heaven.

14:25 But I saw their many innumerable armies called Gregory. Guess who the Gregory are? Now They call them those the Giants. And their appearance was like the appearance of a human being, and their size was larger than that of large giants. And their faces were dejected. In the silence of their mouths was perpetual. So they were not singing and there was no liturgy in the 5th heaven. So they weren't singing any hymns. And I said unto the men who were with me, What is the explanation that these ones are so very dejected and their faces miserable, and their mouth silent? And why is there no liturgy in this heaven? And those men answered me, These are the good Gory who turned aside from the Lord, together with their Prince Satanayu. These are the ones who fell, the watchers who fell. Interesting.

15:20 And they're ashamed, one of the footnotes reads. These must be the unfallen watchers. The brothers are the ones who fell. OK, that make that actually makes more sense because there's higher than than like what we just read. And that seems pretty good, right? And so if, if it's an ascending pattern, which would make sense with everything from Jacob's ladder to to temple practice there, that wouldn't make sense. But it would make sense if it was those who stayed righteous. But yet we're still ashamed because of their brethren, so to speak.

16:03 Now we get to the rest of that story. Age 113. Oops. OK. And these Grigory, they broke the promise to God on the shoulder of Mount Hermon. They saw the daughters of men, how beautiful they were, and took wise for themselves, and the earth was defiled by their deeds. Who and the wives of men created great evil in the entire time of this age, acted lawlessly and practiced miscegenation, and gave birth to giants and great monsters and great enmity. And that is why God has judged them with a great judgment. And they mourn their brothers, and they will be outraged on the great day of the Lord.

17:01 And I said to the Grigory, I have seen this is Enoch says, yeah, I was there. I have seen your brothers and their deeds and their torments and their great prayers, and I have prayed for them. That's incredible. Forgive your enemies. Yeah, but the Lord has sentenced them under the earth until heaven and earth are ended forever. And I said, why are you waiting for your brothers? And why don't you perform the liturgy before the face of the Lord? Start your liturgy and perform the liturgy before the face of the Lord, so that you do not enrage your Lord God to the limit. Is thou cool?

17:43 Enoch is. And they responded to my recommendation. And they stood in four regiments in this heaven. And behold, while I was standing with those men, 4 trumpets trumpeted in Usen with a great sound, and the Grigory burst into singing in unison, and their voice rose in front of the face of the Lord, piteously and touchingly. I think that's cool. This is interesting and there's some old stuff that I'd once heard from from a few old timers on on something that's going to touch this Enoch. I don't think it's completely translated yet. Is that right or wrong here, Ken? This is a vision so, well, that's a good question I can't answer entirely because his I don't think his city is translated yet.

18:36 OK, so there's there's again, there was a few old timers I've heard this from who said that there were teachings that were taught to them that were taught to their grandfathers. There's nothing written down here on this but that those who had been in doubt, who had the garment essentially. Yeah. Can can ask for angelic help, right, in a way that's different than just say, praying about it. This is fascinating to me because it seems here that these these Grigory are recognizing some sort of authority that Enoch has so that he can speak to them, some sort of comfort that causes them to break forth into singing.

19:27 And I find it interesting that a mortal in this vision is having this kind of an impact. But yeah, what I think is interesting. I saw the horrible things that they did, and I'm praying for them. Yeah. Isn't that incredible? Yeah. Yeah, That's crazy. All right. And those men, his guides, took me from there and they carried me up to the 6th heaven. And I saw their seven groups of angels. Brilliant and glorious, regular. And their faces were more radiant than the radiance of the sun. So with each progressive heaven, things are getting more and more glorious. So we started in the stellar regions, now we're in with the sun.

20:09 And there was no difference between their faces or in the dimensions or in the style of their clothing. And these groups carry out and carefully study the movements of the stars and the revolution of the sun and the phases of the moon and the well-being of the cosmos. And when they see any evil activity. They put the commandments and instructions in order, and the sweet choral singing and every kind of glorious praise. These are the archangels who are over the angels, and they harmonize all existence, heavenly and earthly. And angels who are over seasons and years, and angels who are over rivers and ocean, and angels who are over the fruits of the earth and over every kind of grass. And we give every kind of food, every kind of living thing.

20:49 And angels who record all human souls and all their deeds of all their lives before the face of the face of the Lord. And in the midst of them are 7 phoenixes and seven cherubim and seven Sixth wing beings. Again, these other beings who are participating in the Great Plan, having but one voice and singing in unison. They're unified. They're one. Their song is not to be reported. You can't write it, you can't describe it. And the Lord is delighted by His footstool, and then he goes to the 7th heaven. These men carried him up in 7th heaven. And I saw there an exceptionally great light on all the fiery armies, the great archangels, and the incorporeal forces.

21:31 Incorporeal, those who don't have bodies yet, and the dominions and the origins and the authorities and the cherubim. Remember when the earth was first created, it was created spiritually before it was created temporarily. Yep, and it was nigh unto Kolob when that happened. What that means is that when things were placed upon the earth spiritually before physically, it was done in a terrestrial state and in our premortal spiritual form. Were we celestial beings? No. No, because I think you have to have think you got to have Subs well and again you.

22:17 Can't, you can't obtain the celestial without making those covenants. We have not yet made those covenants. So technically when we say return, you know, we want to return home. It's not really. That's not we were. We've never been to the celestial, but we did have access to God in the terrestrial. OK. So this it could mean pre mortal spirits, most mortal spirits in Paradise, you know, awaiting their resurrection, Yeah. Yeah, the doors wide open on that. Let's see incorporeal forces and the Dominions and the origins and the authorities, the Cherubim and the Seraphim and the many Eyed Thrones regiments and the shining stations. And I was terrified, and I trembled with a great fear. So he's seen all these glories up to now, but this one's freaking him out.

23:14 And those men picked me up and LED me into their midst. And they said to me, be brave, Enoch, don't be frightened. And this is interesting because in 3rd Enoch the role is going to be reversed for him. Really. Because he becomes one of those angels. OK. And he's helping Rabbi Ishmael do the same thing. This is so cool. And these two documents have no knowledge of one another as far as the the Providence goes. And they showed me the Lord from a distance, sitting on his exceedingly high throne for what is on the 10th heaven? Ah, so from the 7th heaven, from Paradise he can see the celestial.

23:59 In fact, we read that when Adam and Eve were in the Garden of Eden before the fall, they could see the Father. Yep, from a distance. That makes sense. Couldn't be in his presence, but they could see for what is on the 10th heaven, since the Lord is present there. And on the 10th heaven is gone. And it is called in the Hebrew language Aravath. And all the heavenly armies came and stood on the 10 steps corresponding to their ranks, and they did obeisance to the Lord. And then they went to their places in joy and merriment and in immeasurable light, singing songs with soft and gentle voices, while presenting the liturgy to Him gloriously.

24:40 How interesting. He sees the 8th heaven. He sees the 9th heaven, which he doesn't describe necessarily, which would be of if if there are three divisions to the celestial he saw where the ministering angels are. The second degree of this celestial, which we have no description of in ours, reveal scripture and then exaltation would be the 10th. I thought we could work that out if we tried. And on the 10th Heaven Avaroff, I saw the view of the face of the Lord, like iron made burning hot in a fire and brought out. I'm told that when iron is is glowing hot, it's like 1500°, something like that.

25:23 This is going to be a lot hotter than that, I'm sure. And it emits sparks that is incandescent. He's describing, I mean light emanating from this face in and is glowing. Thus even I saw the face of the Lord. But the face of the Lord is not to be talked about. It is so very marvelous and supremely awesome and supremely frightening. And who am I to give an account of the incomprehensible being of the Lord and of His face, so extremely strange and indescribable? And how many are His commands and his multiple voice remembered? Section 110 talks about describing the voice of God as the rushing of many waters, the rushing of great waters. Yep. Can you imagine that?

26:04 Absolutely. And the Lord's throne, supremely, supremely great, and not made by hands. The choir stalls all around him, the cherubim and the seraphim armies, and they're never silent singing. Who can give an account of this beautiful appearance, never changing and indescribable, in His great glory? Chapter 21 starting with verse 8 and the Lord said to Michael, go now, Now it's time for the real thing. After the vision, go and extract Enoch from his earthly clothing.

26:48 Here we go. I the voices that came into my head are from the adult getting specific instructions to Michael. Yep, go and do this and then do this. It's very go and extract Enoch from his earthly clothing and anoint. I mean, Oh my goodness, is that not ringing in your ears. Yeah, anoint. So go and do this and then do this and instruct into this. Holy smokes. See, I've read this 100 times and I'm just this. All this stuff has been brought in my head. Describing a It's describing an endowment, or part of the endowment at least. Yes, it is in the same verbiage that we get in our endowment. Yep.

27:36 Go and extract Enoch from his earthly clothing and anoint him in my delightful oil and put him into the clothes of my glory. Ha ha, ha, ha. And its ointment is like sweet dew in its fragrance, myrrh, and it is like the rays of the glittering sun. And I looked at myself and I had become like one of his glorious ones. And there was no observable difference. He's describing terrestrial glory in 3rd Enoch. In 3rd Enoch, he's going to describe celestial glory. I was going to say, this should be one of those things that help us put the endowment and the ordinance itself into perspective. Amen.

28:25 Oh yeah. We should come out of the temple changed from when we went in and we we need to understand that this is a transformative process. And Enoch brings that to bear here when he says, And I beheld myself like I was one of the glorious ones right that you're in down. There's no observable difference, yeah. You you should understand that you should come out of there different than what you went in very good. And that doesn't mean it's going to happen all at once. You got to keep going back, but at some point, if this doesn't become real for us, we're not picking up the full and the full effect of the temple and its teachings and its ordinances. Or as Alma described it, the mighty change, right? Have you, have you experienced that mighty change? All right, Here he talks about sit down, write and witness all the souls of men, whatever of them, are not yet born, and their places prepared for eternity. For all the souls are prepared for eternity before the composition of the earth.

Matriarchs are born matriarchs, and even in sin they can still give life. And it requires absolutely those two roles, those two priesthoods, patriarchy and matriarchy, for the plan of salvation to function. 100%.

35:27 Matriarchy is responsible for the tree of knowledge, which is what brings up Adam was born into mortality through Eve, the ultimate matriarch, and we ascend. By her, By her giving him the fruit. Yeah, I. Can. That's right. She gave birth to him temporarily. Incredible. She fulfilled that role. Matriarchy is in charge of that, getting us here, bringing us into this world. The patriarchy has responsibility for the theory of life, which ultimately retrieve us from this world.

36:08 We cannot have one without the other. So the women who say we want priesthood authority, you nibly would say you already have it. Why do you want authority from men? Why do you want to be a patriarch? You're not a patriarch. You do you understand your role? Do you understand your authority? Right. And even as matriarchs, they do have patriarch authority to function in the ordinances within the walls of the temple and are set apart and have authority given them to function in the callings within the realms of of the Kingdom of God on the earth. OK, blah blah blah.

37:02 Enough digression. OK, Chapter 31, Perfect sense. And I created for him, Speaking of Adam and open heaven. So here he is in paradise, the terrestrial, but heaven was open so that he might look just as we talked about he's in, we could call it the 7th heaven, but he can see, but he, he can see the 10th or at least the 8th going on from there, skipping ascension, a dreary which looks like this, singing the triumphal song. So we can see heaven, the Angel singing and the light which is never darkened was perpetually in paradise. And the devil understood how I wished to create another world so that everything could be subjected to Adam on the earth to rule and reign over it.

Second, God shows Enoch the epoch of this world, the age of this world, world, the existence of 7000 years, and the 8000 is the end. The years are months and weeks are days. So there's talk about the eight thousandth year, which is the winding up of the set of that of the 7000 temporal years. The temporal existence of the world is 7000 years. According to Doctrine Covenant section 77, Christ was born in the Meridian of time. Well, he was born of 4000.

39:28 That's not the Meridian of 7000. It is the Meridian of 8000. So 8008 thousand. And Joseph F Smith taught about this eight thousandth year being necessary. It's the finishing up of what happened in the 7000 years, right? Pretty awesome stuff. Oh, totally. OK, here's this again, and all the world finally marked that again, and all the world will be reduced to confusion by iniquities and wickedness. This is chapter 34 talk about the wicked by iniquities and wickednesses and abominable fornications.

40:14 That is friend with friend in the anus, and every other kind of wicked uncleanliness which is disgusting to report. And the worship of the evil one. There it is. Oh, this is cool. Chapter 35, speaking to Enoch. And I will leave a righteous man from your tribe, together with all his house, who will act in accordance with my will. And from his seed another generation will arise, the last of many. So I think the first one we're talking about Noah, but after the last of many generations, but even out of those, the majority will be very insatiable. That describes our day.

We could study this, I think for the rest of our lives and only still be scratching the surface on this. But I think the true gift here is it's Enoch himself a little bit, right? What he's willing to do to be close to God, which is to allow himself to feel on a level that I think very few of us are willing to go. Because when you love somebody or people that much, heartbreak is a surety.

2:05:03 It's it's an absolute surety because you're going to see all the wicked stuff man does to each other and that's going to, that's going to hurt. But nonetheless, it's absolutely necessary if we want to be as God is, because God loves us with nothing held back. And if we desire those blessings, we have to learn the way that Enoch loved, which is the way God loved or loves, and be able to put that into some sort of practice. Only to figure out what gives us, I mean really gives us joy, how to serve because we all serve differently. We're all built differently, to serve differently in the body of the Kingdom of God and to find it where we find the most joy serving.

2:05:58 This last thing that I just read about the resurrected Enoch taking all of these children who died young even be even before they were born for the first time as I read it, I thought, Oh my gosh, I have a son. His name is Evan, who died when he was 10, and this was 20, three years ago, and who's on my mind every day. And I thought, wouldn't that be so cool if Evan was amongst that company, sitting at the feet of Enoch and learning from him amongst all the other things I can only imagine he's doing? I think that's the gift, right?

You know, without trying to sound too much like a hippie, it does ultimately go back to the love of the father that he has for his children. Well, they're all. Things and a way to get back. I really focus on that as my choir gave a concert about the resurrection, things leading up to it, and what the resurrection itself leads to and to feel more profoundly than ever in my life thus far, the greatest gift of all of the gifts of God, which is eternal life. And then she started to worry. Oh, well, if he's still alive, is he out? Is he scared? Is he lost? And again, those things never crossed my mind because I believe in an omniscient, omnipotent, all loving God who will never, I mean the wicked, you know, we'll get what's coming to him. But her father was a really good guy and we could and we could witness to her with the absolute surety he's probably better off than he's ever been in his life.

And I, I, I cannot imagine the hopelessness I would feel not knowing that I would hold that my boy again, right? And that there is a purpose to the brevity of his life that will manifest itself in the Millennium in terms of we we need the transitionary beings to communicate to those on this earth the necessary and necessary information from the other side. I mean, yeah.

And that hope and more than hope, that faith and that assurance, the knowledge that I have is the gift of the restored gospel, most importantly, and also the gift of these Enoch texts, which is a part of, which is a part of my witness, you know.
